Xbox Problems are categorized by 1, 2, 3, or 4 Red Lights on the ring of light (power button), and clear error codes.
This narrative summarizes the reasons and potential solutions for these problems.

1 Red Light - indicates a definite Hardware Failure
Code E65 indicates a Dvd Drive Error which could be caused by incorrect firmware, or a timeout.
Code E67 indicates a hard drive Error which could either be a question with the Xbox hard drive itself, or the the hard drive internal connection. Try using the Xbox after taking the hard drive out to see if it works.
Code E68 indicates a hard drive Error which could either be a question with the Xbox hard drive itself, or the the hard drive internal connection. Try using the Xbox after taking the hard drive out to see if it works. E68 could also indicate an Eprom error.
Code E69 indicates a hard drive Error which could either be a question with the Xbox Hard Drive itself, or the the hard drive internal connection. Try using the Xbox after taking the hard drive out to see if it works.
Code E74 indicates an Av cable problem. Try using a distinct Av cable. It could also indicate a question with the encoder chip.
Code E79: indicates a hard drive Error which could either be a question with the Xbox hard drive itself, or the the hard drive internal connection. Try using the Xbox after taking the hard drive out to see if it works.
2 Red Lights -indicates Overheating
Leave your Xbox to cool down for a few hours. Wait until it is properly cool before turning it on again and ensure that your Xbox has sufficient ventilation around it, and that it's fan is operating properly.
How to forestall overheating:
Make sure none of the ventilation holes on the console are blocked (don't put it on a carpet, bed, or any other soft exterior as this could block ventilation openings).
Also don't put the power brick on a carpet.
Never put it in a confined space such as a Tv Unit, unless it is fully ventilated.
Keep it away from any heat sources such as heaters, other electronic goods and direct sunlight.
Never put your Xbox in a fridge or other cold place to cool down. Cold temperatures cause condensation to occur which could short out your console.
3 Red Lights (the red ring of death, Rrod) - indicates a general Hardware Failure
This is the most tasteless question in the Xbox 360. It was estimated that about 30% of all customary consoles would get the Ring of Death. With the newer consoles the risk has dropped to about 6%.
Restart the system. If this doesn't work, turn the console off and unplug all the Av and power cables, then firmly reconnect them all again and turn the console on again.
Next, turn the Xbox off and remove the hard drive. After this turn it on again, and if the 3 red lights are no longer showing, turn it off again and put the hard drive back.
Also check that the power brick light is green even when the three lights on the power button are red.
Should you get the three red lights (Ring of death), your options are to have it fixed by Microsoft, or another fix center, or to fix it yourself. See below for more info.
4 Red Lights - indicates that the Av cable cannot be detected
Try disconnecting and then reconnecting the Av cable to the Xbox console.
Try wiping the metal part that plugs into the console with a dry cloth.
Try using a distinct Av cable.
